Ten Facts About Mohenjo-daro

Since the film Mohenjo-daro is round the corner, why don’t we go over some of the facts of actual Mohenjo-daro site.

• Mohenjo-daro means Mound of the Dead Men. Lot of people believe it is related to Lord Krishna because of name Mohan.
• It is located on west of Indus river in Larkana District currently in Sindh, Pakistan.

• This is one of the largest cities of Indus valley civilization and was built around 2600 BCE
• Shocking fact is it remained undiscovered for 3700 years until R.D. Banerji an officer of Archaelogical survey of India identified it.
• Excavation of site was banned in 1965 due to weathering damage to exposed structure.
• Mud bricks, mortared bricks were used to build structures, houses, bath etc.
• The city was modern in its own having public bath, assembly halls, marketplace, huge wells, double story houses etc.
• Mohenjo-daro was successively destroyed and rebuilt for at least seven times. Each time the new city was built on top of old ones. Flooding by Indus must have been cause of destruction.
• Lot of statues were excavated from the ground and it is evident that dancing was part of the culture. People knew techniques of metal blending, casting and other methods of working with ore.
• They used to breed chicken but not for eating purposes. These were used for religious significance for sacrifice purposes.

Currently the site is in bad shape and it ruining by every single day due to lack of proper conservation methods.
