Workaholics Enigma

Another great weekend is over. Whether I go out or stay back home weekend is always special and fun for me. I always look forward to weekend (I hope my boss isn’t reading this). I wish that weekend should never ends but all good things come to end sooner. In the morning I was brewing my coffee to keep me awake throughout the day. One of my colleague walked in and we were chit chatting about weekend. This is how conversation went.

I – Hey how was your weekend?

Him - It was good except for the fact that I worked during weekend.

I – Oh that’s sad your boss is making you work too much

Him – No my boss didn’t asked me to come, I came to office on my own

I – Why on earth you do that?

Him – Actually I didn’t had anything to do at home, so I came to office simple.

I was shocked (literally) with his answer. I am also working from last six years and from day one I was never like that. It wasn’t just him, I came across many geeks like him on daily basis who speak the same language.

The point is how come you don’t have anything do to apart from coming to office? You can go for film, watch television, read newspaper or a book, meet your friends, and do your household chores, if nothing to do then just take rest at home.

Like the other day there wasn’t much to do that day in office. My boss told me and my colleague that we can leave early like two hours before stipulated time. To which I left office immediately and my colleague said that he will leave at designated time only as he is planning to work on something which could be done next week as well. Fools like him fails to understand importance of meaning of life. To them working for long hours, getting promotion is the only achievement.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam our former president and great man of nation has said that
“Life is not only about work, office and client. There is more to life. You need time to socialize, entertain, relax and exercise. Don’t let life be meaningless.”

I came across lot of people who take pride in telling that they work for long hours. Dedicated to all such fools is another quote from Dr. Kalam

“A person who stays late at the office is not a hardworking person. Instead he/she is a fool who does not know how to manage work within the stipulated time. He/She is inefficient and incompetent in his work.”

This is 100% correct. If you listen to your grandparents, parents they would say that their parents or they themselves use to go to office and come back on time. They had very balanced life. People were happier before even with less earnings. These days’ people are working hard, running after more and more but what is the benefit if you don’t have time to spend your hard earned money on yourself. You made a beautiful house but you don’t have time to make it home. You are working day and night and earning good salary. But it is of what use if you don’t have time to spend time with your family?
I could only suggest to all workaholics just come out of your enigma as when you will retire from your job you will be empty without any memories. You can’t share stories of your presentations, long hours in office with your grandchildren. What you can share is how much quality time you spent with your family.

There is great meaning to life other than work. Just find it and live your life well as you know “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”

  2. I could picture this conversation with my husband too. Except that his boss always asks him to come to office during weekends :( The prob is he works for a Bank and it's very hard there, people who keep working keep working and the other don't ever bother to work. I guess we are all stuck in a cycle huh! :(
